“Going Public Concerts!”

Written by gregdenham on October 22nd, 2010

As many of you know we’ve started a new outreach at the church purposed to get out in the public and plant seeds of the Gospel and invite people to church and just be available to the people in our community. We’re calling them “Going Public Concerts!” Some of the songs that Sarah, Pete and Lily are singing at these concerts can be viewed below. Enjoy!

When I reflect back to the “Going Public” on 10-16-2010, I get an image from the pictures of the witness we took as a body to the center of Auburn.
It makes me remember Hebrews 12:1; “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”

To think that Calvary Chapel Auburn was “like a could” surrounding the praise team provoked some thoughts.
Adam Clarke commenting on the meaning of “cloud” writes that…
Both the Greeks and Latins frequently use the term cloud, to express a great number of persons or things.
The picture of a cloud then would describe a crowded group of people and express not only the great number of people, but also the unity of the crowd in their witness
To see the going public event as a display of our “Unity” in Christ is exciting.

Paul seamed to state in 1 Corinthians, that the church in Corinth was divided and contentious.
He goes on to describe the problem in Corinth was carnality. What a concept!!! In the first letter to the Corinthians, Paul affirms the cure for the carnality that erupts is the cross of Christ. He intimates that the main issue in Corinth is SELF- displayed in division contention.
Paul says the cure for self carnality is; “The Cross of Christ.”
Paul says the Cross of Christ is the cure for carnality for the Corinthians, and any society consumed with self. Self brings division and contention. And don’t we see that today!
Our information age has focused people on self. So how does our gathering together in a public square show Auburn the cross of Christ?
We become the light of the gospel with our unity and worship. Its not what we say out there its what we are doing. We are getting out of our rut gathering together as a family and proclaiming our love for Jesus and His completed work. We became a witnessing cloud of unity to the work of Christ, the cause of Christ and the love of Christ.
Isn’t THAT what He called us to do? And we did it as a Church body- a family of believers committed to the Cross as the only cure for selfish carnality!!
Isn’t that a message our world needs to see??
We became salt and light as a body of believers committed to the unity of the faith with no divisions or contentions!!!
    Wow!!
Do you see what I see? or am I just a freak for Jesus????

So; what is the Cross of Christ? What does it mean to us?
Let me define the Cross of Christ by way of contrast.
The cross of Christ for the Christian is the exact opposite of carnality.
    Carnality is self-centered, self-oriented, self-promoting, self-reliant.
The cross of Christ is Christ-centered, Christ-oriented, Christ-promoting, and Christ-reliant.
Carnality speaks of selfishness, lording it over others, prideful rights, manipulation, and rebellion.
The Cross of Christ speaks of sacrifice, servant hood, relinquishing rights, submission and
    surrender to God.
Carnality results in pain, bondage, sorrow, and separation from God.
The Cross of Christ leads to peace, liberty, joy, and the presence of Christ by the Holy Spirit.
Carnality is sinful; the Cross of Christ is holy.

Oswald Chambers said the following about the cross:

“The Cross of Christ means that the salvation of God goes deeper down than the deepest
depths of iniquity man can commit. No man can get beyond the reach of Jesus: He made
a way back to the throne of God from the very heart of hell by His tremendous
    Atonement.” (Bringing Sons Into Glory – 1943 – p. 51).

Paul said to the Corinthians, 1 Corinthians 2:2; “For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.”
To a dyeing world that lives in sounds and pictures we became the message. Not by what we said- but by what we did as a body.
The body of Christ witnessed the love of the Cross in sound and sight. God was glorified by that offering, because it spoke all about His son.
Thank you Pastor Greg for the vision God gave you of going public. Do you hear the words of Jesus speaking?
I can hear, Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
We started in our Jerusalem (Auburn); but Youtube is carrying it to Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
Can I get an Amen to that!!!!!??????!????!????
